I've loved sharks since I was a kid, and I've grown to appreciate them more as I've learned about them throughout my fishing career. The most successful way to catch one is to come across a hungry one- when we're fishing a reef and get bit off by a shark, we drop down heavy tackle with a big bait. If all goes well, and you do your part, we'll get a great chance for a photo opp while we tag the shark and remove the wire leader to safely release it. Usually by the end of the fight, other sharks in the area are warded of by the commotion and we can resume targeting reef fish. I've been on both sides of shark fishing, and over the years I've gotten a sour taste from killing them for sport. The ONLY way I'll allow you to harvest a shark is if you have it taxidermized, pay my deckhand to clean it, and take responsibility for not wasting the meat.
One of the best parts about a well constructed fishing trip is the food. Please bring some charcoal and whatever you'd like to cook. We can also legally cook up to 1.5lbs of fish per person, as long as their in season and as long as we count them towards our limit. I can teach you how I make ceviche and grill fish on the half shell, or we can try out your favorite recipe! On top of a fresh seafood meal though, it's always nice to have snacks on standby. Please bring water and Gatorade as well, as I'll be harping on you throughout the trip to stay hydrated.
Trust me, I don't want to be stuck in a storm any worse than you do. For the most part, we can avoid fishing in heavy rain and lightning by looking at where the thunderheads are projected to go, and fishing in different areas. Sometimes we do get caught in inclement weather, but please do not be too concerned about it. My boat is tough, and her crew's well seasoned. We will do everything that we can to keep you safe, and ill do my very best to teach you what to do in a storm should you ever get caught in one without me. Some of my most memorable days fishing have been the roughest, it's all part of the adventure! I'll make you a deal though: if at any point you get uncomfortable, you can let me know and we can turn around with absolutely no judgement from me. but if at any point I feel that it is unsafe for my boat, my crew and you, I'll call it and we can reschedule.
Luckily for you, I got sea sick every day for the first four years I fished for a living. With so much experience, I'm pretty good and walking somebody through it. If the remedies that I can offer don't work for you, just say the word and I'll take us back to shore. We can finish the day out with a boat ride in the calm waters of the bay, or I can get you back to the marina as quickly as possible. There's no shame whatsoever, and I'll only charge you for the time we've spent out. After we get back safely, we can either try to go out again with everyone who's didn't get sick or reschedule for a calmer date.
You're responsible for any tackle that you drop over my boat. I'll be as polite as possible about it, but expect to replace anything lost out of negligence. Breaking tackle while you're fighting a fish is a totally different scenario. I'll never yell at you for snapping a rod trying to get a big Red Snapper off of a reef! If it happens, we'll focus on getting the fish in, and I'll give you the broken rod as a souvenir. The only time you'll be charged for tackle is if you drop it over the boat.
